Dilution Calculator (C1V1 = C2V2)
Enter any three values and leave the fourth blank. Use the same units for both concentrations and both volumes.
Serial dilutions
For a 10-fold serial dilution, transfer 1 part of each tube into 9 parts diluent. After n steps the concentration is C1 ÷ 10ⁿ. For example, three 1:10 steps give a 1:1,000 dilution.

FAQ
What does C1V1 = C2V2 mean?
C1 and V1 are the concentration and volume of the stock; C2 and V2 are the concentration and volume of the diluted solution. The amount of solute stays the same, so the products are equal.
How much diluent do I add?
Diluent volume = V2 − V1. Example: to make 100 mL of 1× from a 10× stock, take 10 mL of stock and add 90 mL of diluent.
Does C1V1 = C2V2 work with any units?
Yes, as long as C1 and C2 use the same unit and V1 and V2 use the same unit.
What is a dilution factor?
The dilution factor is C1 ÷ C2 (or V2 ÷ V1). A 1:10 dilution means 1 part stock in 10 parts total.
